Big Thai

Summary: Of course any restaurant of an Asian persuasion is more likely to be vegetarian friendly, so Big Thai is already up to four stars. The simple fact that they can put tofu in many of their dishes automatically doubles or triples the amount of options a vegan has when perusing the menu. Also, if you\’re vegan you must remember to ask them to leave out the fish sauce as most Thai dishes use it whether or not it\’s a non-meat dish. This means you may end up adding a little soy sauce at the table, but that\’s no big deal. All in all, we had a decent experience at Big Thai though nothing to call home about.

Review

The Food: We ordered the yellow curry (one of my favorite Thai dishes) and something along the lines of Drunken Tofu. It was quite a while ago that we ate there so I\’m not entirely sure that\’s what it was called. The curry was pretty average, nothing notable. I will definitely be trying other dishes on return visits as the curry is nothing I would crave and just have to have. The Druken Tofu was also decent. I enjoyed it more than the curry. The rice that came with our entrees was strangely small. We had to ask for another bowl and even that wasn\’t enough. What kind of Thai restaurant doesn\’t give you a ton of jasmine rice? It was our first visit though and maybe they just ran out of their normal large rice bowls.

The Atmosphere: Weird. The high ceilings and cheap linoleum tile flooring made the space very awkward and far too open. It seems like it would be better suited as a pizza joint. On the other hand the napkins were linen and the plates were shaped like leaves. At one point I looked over and saw a couple canoodling in the corner with a bottle of wine chilling in a bucket next to their table and sitting on the table right beside them was a bottle of Windex and a towel. That juxtaposition pretty must summed up the Big Thai atmosphere. It\’s as though they\’re trying to create a sophisticated dining experience, but fall quite short of achieving this. Still, atmosphere will never keep me away from good food. I\’m willing to give them another try.
