Has a great selection of vegetarian dishes along with mock meats. Very friendly waitstaff. oh and did i mention that they deliver (to the downtown area as well!!!) double bonus
Thai Spice
This place just opened up in Monkey Junction, and hopefully it stays that way. Wilmington has a reputation for having Thai restaurants open and promptly close. This place is extremely veg friendly, all their entrees, except their “Specials”…all of them…can be made with chicken, pork, or Tofu!
Also the appetizer of fried tofu is good. Mmmm..
Brixx Pizza
They’re in Mayfaire by the movie theater, if you haven’t noticed them. They are open ridiculously late too, which I like, because hanging out at Waffle House all the time does get old.
While they don’t offer a “build your own” pizza option, you can ask for pretty much anything to be substituted. Best of all, they offer vegan cheese! And whole wheat crust, which makes me happy. Nothing is straight up vegan, but basically anything can be made vegan.
I know few vegans who don’t love a mountain of beans and rice wrapped up in a warm flour tortilla. And, if you’re like me, drenched in hot sauce. At Flaming Amy’s vegans have more options than just beans and rice and a few veggies. They actually offer marinated tofu! It’s not insanely delicious, but hey - at least you can feel like you’re eating a balanced meal instead of just stripping a regular menu item until it’s just a few measly vegan ingredients. Personally I like my burritos more on the wet side than Flaming Amy’s offers, but the tofu makes up for it. Sort of. You also have a choice of black beans, pinto, or both.
They have a pretty extensive menu so I could be wrong, but I don’t think they have any item that is straight-up vegan. Whatever you order you’ll have to ask for it without cheese or sour cream. I haven’t inquired yet as to whether or not their guacamole has sour cream in it.
And speaking of condiments, let’s not forget the salsa bar and the hot sauce collection. The salsa bar has such gems as the Wasabi Avocado Salsa, Pineapple Jalepeno Salsa, and Chipotle Tomatillo Salsa among four or five other varieties. There is a small cut-out section of a wall that houses their hot sauces - everything from Cholula and Tapatio to Sriracha.
All-in-all Flaming Amy’s isn’t a Vegan Paradise, but it’s not like such a thing exists in Wilmington (yet). If you need a burrito fix this is a good place to go, especially if you’re with meat-eaters.
Lucky Star Chinese
Three words: General Tso\’s Tofu.
Delicious!
They\’re right around the corner from me, so it can be delivered to me whenever I want. They have a good deal of vegetarian options considering they are an el cheapo Chinese joint.
CiCi’s Pizza
I don’t really know why I did this to myself. Maybe because it’s only five dollars and I was excruciatingly broke at the time…or perhaps I’m just an idiot.
If you happen to find yourself in CiCi’s Pizza, and you happen to be vegan, here is what you can eat:
*Unlimited salad, with limited options. I usually wind up with lettuce, tomato, cucumber, shredded carrots, and vinegar, because I don’t know what is in those dressings.
*Unlimited pasta with marinara sauce. Because obviously, the alfredo is not vegan. And I don’t even know if you would want that marinara sauce, because I’m pretty sure it has MSG in it, according to CiCi’s website.
Sure, it’s 5 bucks, but it’s not really worth it.
Big Thai
Summary: Of course any restaurant of an Asian persuasion is more likely to be vegetarian friendly, so Big Thai is already up to four stars. The simple fact that they can put tofu in many of their dishes automatically doubles or triples the amount of options a vegan has when perusing the menu. Also, if you\’re vegan you must remember to ask them to leave out the fish sauce as most Thai dishes use it whether or not it\’s a non-meat dish. This means you may end up adding a little soy sauce at the table, but that\’s no big deal. All in all, we had a decent experience at Big Thai though nothing to call home about.
Review
The Food: We ordered the yellow curry (one of my favorite Thai dishes) and something along the lines of Drunken Tofu. It was quite a while ago that we ate there so I\’m not entirely sure that\’s what it was called. The curry was pretty average, nothing notable. I will definitely be trying other dishes on return visits as the curry is nothing I would crave and just have to have. The Druken Tofu was also decent. I enjoyed it more than the curry. The rice that came with our entrees was strangely small. We had to ask for another bowl and even that wasn\’t enough. What kind of Thai restaurant doesn\’t give you a ton of jasmine rice? It was our first visit though and maybe they just ran out of their normal large rice bowls.
The Atmosphere: Weird. The high ceilings and cheap linoleum tile flooring made the space very awkward and far too open. It seems like it would be better suited as a pizza joint. On the other hand the napkins were linen and the plates were shaped like leaves. At one point I looked over and saw a couple canoodling in the corner with a bottle of wine chilling in a bucket next to their table and sitting on the table right beside them was a bottle of Windex and a towel. That juxtaposition pretty must summed up the Big Thai atmosphere. It\’s as though they\’re trying to create a sophisticated dining experience, but fall quite short of achieving this. Still, atmosphere will never keep me away from good food. I\’m willing to give them another try.
Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn
Flaming amy’s burritos can be made with tofu. I love the Thai me with with tofu, no cheese and extra peanut sauce. FYI both the black and pinto beans are veg friendly
Flaming Amy’s Bowl
It’s mongolian grill style, so meat is 100% optional. If you don’t want it, don’t take it off the buffet. We have 20-30 different ingredients total, only five of which are meat. All sauces are vegan…unless you’re a hardcore vegan and don’t eat honey, in which case the Honey Garlic Wasabi is not for you.
Loveys
Loveys is incredible, they have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options. My favorite thing to get, is the tofu melt which is only about 5 bucks, and its vegan!
