History
Be Your Own Hero started when a group of friends who were interested in radical community building got together. We hosted Wilmington’s first Really Really Free Market the summer of 2007 which received a great response so some of us decided to organize a Do It Yourself (DIY) Fest in September of 2007, called Be Your Own Hero Fest.

Hero Fest brought in people from all over North Carolina from Greenville, to Jacksonville, the Triangle, the Triad, and even Asheville and Myrtle Beach. We had workshops on radical parenting, food politics, the RNC/DNC protests, trans/queer issues, radical women’s health and so much more. People generously brought items and skills to share so as well as food, zines, and awesome bands came like Ghost Mice.

We named this Fest the Be Your Own Hero Fest because we found that we had all been waiting for other people to start doing things in Wilmington for so long – but we had the power the whole time to do things ourselves – to be our own heroes. The name stuck and we’re now inviting anyone who wants to be their own hero to do just that. Come out to one of our monthly meetings, or get involved in one of our various projects.
